Division of Obstetrics
The Department of Obstetrics of the West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University was approved as one of the first national key clinical specialty construction projects in 2010. We are currently the treatment and referral center for critically ill mothers in western China, the head unit of the Sichuan and Chengdu emergency obstetrics expert group, and the Sichuan Obstetrics and Gynecology Quality Control Center, undertaking the monitoring, prevention and treatment of perinatal critical illnesses, with a high level of obstetrical diagnosis and treatment of difficult and serious illnesses, making outstanding contributions to the reduction of maternal mortality in the region and the country.
We were the first in China to establish a laboratory of perinatal medicine in 1978, and we were the first in China to set up a working group on perinatal medicine and to publish for the first time in China the monograph "Basic and Clinical Perinatal Medicine", which became one of the birthplaces of academic obstetrics in China. In the 1980s, as the head of the national collaborative group, we conducted a study on postpartum hemorrhage and operative vaginal birth, which led to the revision of national standards for postpartum hemorrhage and the standardization of operative vaginal birth techniques. The level of our obstetrics consultation and treatment has long been a leader in China, with the ability to treat difficult and serious illnesses, as well as being a leader for setting clinical standards. We has conducted a series of in-depth clinical studies on the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, and the related results have been published in the world's top academic journals for many times and adopted as evidence-based medicine level I evidence in the Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Postpartum Hemorrhage. We have also made a major breakthrough in translational medicine research on severe pre-eclampsia, from basic research to obtaining granted patents, leading to clinical trials and finally developing a urinary complement factor kit for predicting pre-eclampsia. The research process has been supported by several national and provincial key projects, reflecting the leading level of industry-academia-research integration in China.
In addition, we have established a fetal medicine platform system to provide fetal medicine treatment services, such as fetal growth restriction, complicated twin pregnancies, fetal cardiac arrhythmia and fetal surgery.
We have authored and published 8 guidelines such as China's Guidelines for the Prevention and treatment of Postpartum Hemorrhage (2009) and (2014) and Guidelines for Normal Childbirth, and participated in writing other obstetric guidelines, consensus and clinical norms for more than 50 items. Our research achievements have won many honors, including the first prizes of science and technology at the provincial and ministerial levels and the first prize of the National Science and Technology Award for Maternal and Child Health.
Key Clinical Specialties of Gynaecology
As one of the first batch of national key clinical specialty construction programs, our department has been committed to promoting and innovation of new technologies to deliver innovative, multidisciplinary care for a full range of gynecologic conditions. To this point, we focus on developing our key gynecological specialties by constructing gynecological minimal invasive treatment platform, training talented specialists, etc. These efforts significantly increase the number of patients who benefit from minimal invasive surgery, including the malignant ones. Moreover, we pioneer in a number of domestic advanced technologies, such as single hole abdominal endoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, gasless suspension laparoscopy, total pelvic dissection of recurrent pelvic malignant tumors, and conversion of urine and feces, extensive hysterectomy preserving pelvic nerve function, etc. For women suffered from pelvic problems, our female pelvic medicine & reconstructive surgery program can provide individualized urogynecologic treatment plans, incorporating the most advanced surgical and nonsurgical options available. Guided by the needs of patients, we aim to deliver the best health care, to advance it through innovative research and education, and to improve the health and well-being of the patients.
