The Department of Laboratory Medicine of West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University is the first-class training center for medical, teaching and scientific research personnel of maternity and children in China. It is the first specialized hospital laboratory in China that has been accredited by ISO15189 and College of American Pathologists (CAP). And it is the only "Chinese Children's Lead Poisoning Screening Center" in Sichuan designated by WHO Children's Health Center and National Health Commission. It has also successively won the honors of "National Outstanding Youth Unit", "National May 1st Women's Model Unit", "Sichuan Women’s and Children’s Clinical Laboratory Quality Control Center" and "Sichuan Key Discipline of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics”.

There are 149 employees in the department, including 17 with senior titles and 49 intermediate titles. And there are 1 National Talent, 2 doctoral supervisors, 4 master supervisors, 1 academic and technical leader in Sichuan Province, 3 academic and technical leaders of the Health Commission of Sichuan Province, and 2 reserve candidates for academic and technical leaders of the Health Commission of Sichuan Province.

The laboratory is equipped with first-class facilities and equipment, including assembly lines of blood collection, biochemistry, immunology, hematology, Hemagglutination and microbiology. Among them, the longest biochemistry/ immunology detection integrated assembly line in China have been introduced, and the blood collection line is equipped with 18 windows and pneumatic transmission device to ensure that the specimens are sent for detection within 5~ 6 seconds, so as to realize an efficient, scientific and sterile process from specimen collection, transportation to detection. At the same time, the department has a professional and humanized specimen collection team, the only one in China, and the technical strength is second to none in China. The department has carried out a variety of new clinical testing technology projects with characteristics of obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics, and the detection capability is in the leading position in Southwest China.
