Department of Pediatrics

West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University is the only tertiary hospital specializing in obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics in western China supervised by the National Health Commission.

The Department of Pediatrics, West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University(also called “Huaxi” Pediatrics) originated from Renji Women and Children's Hospital founded in 1896. “Huaxi” Pediatrics was firstly established in 1942 as a part of the West China Union University. It has belonged to the Affiliated Hospital of Sichuan Medical College, the University Hospital of the West China University of Medical Sciences, and the West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University, as the university was renamed and then merged in Sichuan University at 2000.  Through the joint efforts of Dr. Du Shunde, Zhang Junru, Tang Zeyuan, Zheng Deyuan and other generations of predecessors, the Department of Pediatrics has made remarkable achievements in medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and talent training.

For medical service, It is the referral and treatment center for difficult and severe pediatric diseases in Western China, the regional diagnosis and treatment center for childhood leukemia and congenital heart disease of Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing and Tibet designated by the National Health Commission. It also owns the only national Birth Defects Monitoring Center and national Maternal and Child Health Monitoring Studio in China, the National Children's Regional (Southwest) Medical Center, Sichuan Pediatric Quality Control Center, Sichuan Pediatric Clinical Research Center and Huaxi Children's Medical Center. “Huaxi” Pediatrics covers all subdisciplines including neonatology, child health care, pediatric hematology, pediatric respiratory diseases, pediatric immunology, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric neurology, pediatric infectious diseases, PICU, pediatric nephrology, pediatric genetics, pediatric me-x-tabolism and pediatric endocrinology. “Huaxi” Pediatric neonatology was listed in the National Project for Key Clinical Specialty Development.

For medical teaching，it was authorized to confer doctorial degree of pediatrics in 1986 and offer postdoctorial programs in 1991. “Huaxi” Pediatrics have 22 doctoral supervisors and 46 master supervisors till now. In addition to offering undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral programs, it also plays an active role in continuing education. “Huaxi” Pediatrics was listed in National Key Disciplines in 2007, and was rated the National Best Course in 2010.“Huaxi” Pediatrics are the National Key professional base for standardized training of resident physicians.

For scientific research，“Huaxi” Pediatrics has the Key Laboratory of Birth Defects and Related Diseases of Women and Children of Ministry of Education (Sichuan University)", "Key Laboratory of Chronobiology of National Health Commission", "Key Laboratory of Drug Preparation In Vivo and In vitro Correlation Technology research of the State Food and Drug Administration". “Huaxi” Pediatrics has won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the second prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the second prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association and other awards.
