West China Institutes for Women and Children’s Health

West China Institutes for Women and Children’s Health were founded by West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University in 2007. The institutes focus on basic, translational and clinical research to improve women’s and children’s health in China, operating under the philosophy of openness and collaboration. The institutes are under the supervision of the president of West China Second University Hospital Professor Hanmin LIU.

The institutes cover an area of more than 18,000 square meters, of which about 10000 square meters are sited at Huaxi campus of West China Second University Hospital, and the rest at the frontier medical center. Both sites offer spacious experimental space and first-class facilities. The institutes are functionally supported by three major platforms, namely, scientific research equipment sharing platform, laboratory animal center, and biological sample bank. These platforms are well-equipped with advanced scientific instruments such as special MRI for small animals, irradiator, laser confocal microscope, living cell imaging system, flow cytometry, zebrafish behavioral analysis system, etc.

In the institutes, there are a key laboratory of ministry of education for birth defects and related diseases of women and children, a key laboratory of Sichuan Province for development and diseases of women and children and an international joint research center for the health of women and children in Sichuan Province. Independent or joint research centers and laboratories, focusing on both basic and clinical medicine, have been established. The directors or PIs are fully empowered to run their centers or laboratories. And the institutes are proud of its cooperative and innovative team of over two hundred full-time researchers.

Aiming at the medical frontier, serving the discipline development of the hospital and the goal of Sichuan University, the institutes are on the track of sustainable and high standard development.
