Pediatric Surgery Department of West China Hospital of Sichuan University (formerly the First Affiliated Hospital of West China Medical University) was founded on October 1, 1960 by professor Tingze Hu, a famous pediatric surgery expert in China. It is one of the earliest pediatric surgery centers in China. After nearly 60 years of unremitting efforts by four generations of Huaxi people, it has become a pediatric surgical medical center integrating medical treatment, education and research, the chairman unit of Pediatric Surgery Specialty Committee of Sichuan Province and Chengdu Medical Association, and an important diagnosis and treatment center for difficult and acute diseases in western China. Its comprehensive strength and academic influence rank among the top in China. At present, there are 9 professors (including 1 tenured professor and 3 rehired professors), 9 associate professors, 12 attending physicians, and a total of more than 70 medical staff.

The pediatric surgery department of West China Hospital of Sichuan University is one of the first pediatric surgery units authorized to grant  master and doctoral degrees in six programs in China. It has trained more than 100 outstanding pediatric surgery graduate students for the country, and currently there are more than 20 doctoral and master students. In 2006, the department became one of the first training bases for pediatric surgery specialists approved by the Ministry of Health. In 2007, the Department of Pediatrics and the West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University were awarded the National Key Discipline of The Ministry of Health. In 2012, West China Children's Medical Center of Sichuan University was established together with the Department of Pediatrics of West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University.

Since 2011, the Pediatric Surgery Division of West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University and the Pediatric Department West China Hospital have opened a pediatric surgery specialist consultation clinic in the Outpatient Department of West China Second University Hospital, receiving more than 80,000 patients, greatly meeting the needs of pediatric patients. In February 2019, Pediatric Surgery Consultation Clinic opened in Jinjiang campus, realizing the simultaneous treatment of pediatric surgery clinic in both the Huaxi and Jinjiang campuses. Since September 2, 2019, the number of expert visits and receiving time of pediatric surgery in West China Second Univeristy Hospital have been increased, covering a wider range of specialties, including pediatric urology, pediatric general thoracic surgery, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric general surgery and neonatal surgery.

On November 20, 2019, the Pediatric Surgical Ward of West China Second Hospital was officially opened at Jinjiang campus with 35 beds  (including 12 neonatal surgery beds). We mainly treat children with cervical and thoracic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, neonatal surger. At the same time, the operating room of pediatric surgery is equipped with a full set of pediatric 4K high-definition thoracoscopic and laparoscopic equipment, world-class special surgical instruments for neonatal surgery and other advanced pediatric surgical instruments and equipment. Under the cooperative construction and management of West China Hospital and West China Second Hospital, pediatric surgicay will make greater contributions to children's health in southwest China and even the whole country with superior medical ability and advanced service concept.
